Abstract:
2005-10-02T00:00:00ZThe Stylistics of Repetition: Gender and Class in Nawal El-Saadawis God Dies by the NileNayef Ali Al-Joulanhttp://hdl.handle.net/123456789/6212015-09-29T12:11:38Z2005-07-11T00:00:00ZTitle: The Stylistics of Repetition: Gender and Class in Nawal El-Saadawis God Dies by the Nile

Abstract:
Abstract
This study examines the merits of the narrative style in Nawal El-Saadawis God Dies by the Nile (1974; tr. 1985), a text which spawns themes and patterns of class and gender oppression. In particular, the study investigates the authors distinctive use of repetition as a narrative tool, which, rather than being a defect or a sign of creative weakness, as some critics argued, is a successful conceptual and cognitive stylistic narrative device, which also strengthens the novels carefully woven symbolism. It turns out that the text employs a number of patterns of repetition: a pattern which equates beast and human, with particular emphasis on the female; another which serves to underline the monotonous deprivation of the impoverished class, again with additional emphasis on the female; and a third pattern that highlights the sexual oppression of women by the men of the upper and lower classes. Hence, repetition in the text serves to link class and gender oppression, the major concerns of El-Saadawis text. Consequently, those who underestimated El-Saadawis use of repetition overlooked the novels major theme of the interaction between class and gender and ignored the developments in the field of stylistics. This paper does not intend, however, to take sides in the debate over the popularity of El-Saadawi nor to deal with her controversial religious and social affiliations. It is hoped that this paper will engage critical response to this and other translated texts by Arab female writers and place El-Saadawi and her fellow Arab women writers in the mature creative output of women writers from the world.2005-07-11T00:00:00ZRussian-Chechen Conflict: Ground Realities Call for Decisive ActionHani A.M Akho-Rashidahttp://hdl.handle.net/123456789/6202015-09-29T12:10:51Z2005-08-21T00:00:00ZTitle: Russian-Chechen Conflict: Ground Realities Call for Decisive Action

Abstract:
Abstract
The Purpose of this study is to identify the reasons behind the Russian-Chechen conflict. It also takes into account the rise of nationalism in the post communism era, as a catalyst for the conflict in Chechnya and (North Caucasus). The study showed, as well, that the violence and counter violence is in vain, Therefore, Russian must aim at meeting the Chechen aspirations without sacrificing its vital interest in that region (North Caucasus) at the same time the Chechen should realize the changes in the international arena especially after September11, 2001.2005-08-21T00:00:00ZThe Poets Elegy of the Self Across English and Arabic Poetry: A Case Study of John Keats and Malik Ibn Ar-RaybNayef Al-JoulanMoh.
Abstract
This study investigates elegiac verse, particularly elegies of the self, across English and Arabic poetry, by comparing John Keatss When I have Fears that I may Cease to be and the Arab poet Malik Ibn Ar-Raybs poem Malik Ibn Ar-Rayb Yarthy Nafsah, Malik Ibn Ar-Rayb mourning his own death. Despite a few differences, it turns out that both English and Arabic elegiac verse share a great deal of elements in content and technique, reflecting a similar pattern of mourning. There are general elegy-related similarities and the differences remain personal (due to the poets individuality-for two poets of the same culture write different elegies) in addition to minor culture-bound differences. Sorrow, sincerity, and praise are essential components shared by the poems which, more than physical strength or handsomeness, emphasize the qualities of the mind and the spirit, and transform personal grief into universal statements on the futility of human existence, within a philosophical argument on life, death, human relations, accomplishments, and poetic creativity. Poetry is celebrated as a distinction the loss of which to mourn, the power of which to pride oneself at, and the help of which to invoke in order to eloquently (still sincerely) express the situation of mourning and, at the same time, immortalize the poet. Nonetheless, Despite that fact that poetry is important for both poets and Ibn Ar-Rayb is not less interested in poetry than Keats, the two are different in this regard in personal and cultural terms. While Keats is mainly and finally sad at his wasted poetic talent, Ibn Ar-Raybs sadness at the loss of his poetic endeavor is less apparent and important than the tragic loss of his heroic skills. It is hoped that reading Keatss and Ibn Ar-Raybs self-elegies and the light shed on the parallel and unparallel aspects across both poets and cultures may provide a seminal point of departure for further research, which this paper will hopefully provoke.2005-04-18T00:00:00Z
